Renegades of Rhythm

Last summer Gavin Brown’s Enterprise exhibited the entire vinyl collection of hip hop legend Afrika Bambaataa, before it travelled to its permanent home at Cornell University (see initial post here and a few photographs I took, here).

Today Pitchfork announced that a tour by DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist will begin in Toronto on September 1st and end in Vancouver on October 9th. The pair will only spin records from Bambaataa’s collection of over 40,000 disks.

"This has never been done before, definitely not on this scale," said DJ Shadow remarked in the press release. "They're HIS records, with his blessings. This isn't just ANY copy of 'X' breakbeat, it's THE copy, THE copy that started everything. Not just any records, the MASTER OF RECORDS' records."

“The program will be multifaceted.....Bambaataa as artist, exploring the influence of his classics like ‘Planet Rock; Bambaataa as collector, and the genre-defining breaks he discovered; and Bambaataa as peacemaker and force for social change. He influenced an entire generation worldwide, so we feel a great obligation to get it right.”
